Your air conditioner is a life-saver, especially during the summer months in the Philippines. With the temperature outside reaching up to 32 degrees Celsius and more, you won’t be able to function normally without this trusty appliance. But after a long time of use, your air conditioner unit can become dirty. This can affect the efficiency of the appliance and prevent it from working normally. For this reason, you need to learn how to clean your aircon unit.

But if you don’t have this home appliance yet, you might want to check out Hanabishi’s air conditioning units. Aside from the window-type and split-type variants, you can also opt for inverter units for more energy efficiency. Prices start for as low as 8,950 pesos.

Keep on reading to learn how to clean this reliable appliance!

Replace Or Clean The Filter

If you have an AC unit, you will have to clean the filter from time to time to keep it in peak working condition. For those who own split-type units, this applies to both the air filter and the bacteria filter. As a general rule, you will need to wash the filter once a month or every other month, even if you don’t clean the appliance itself.

First, make sure that you unplug your AC unit first. Open the appliance according to the manual and remove the filter. Use a vacuum to remove the dust, hair, and debris from the filter. After that, you can wash the filter with soapy water. Allow it to dry before you put it into the AC unit.

Aside from cleaning, you should also replace the AC filter regularly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Clean The Cooling Fins And Coils

Both window-type and split-type air conditioning units have fins and coils that get dirty over time. The cooling fins are the metallic lines while the coils are the rounded metal pieces inside the appliance. You will need to clean these components a few times each year or depending on the recommendation of your manufacturer.

Window Type AC Unit

For window-type AC units, the use of a fin comb or a soft-bristle brush is suggested. Gently and carefully comb the fins to dust it off. You can wear a pair of gloves to protect your hands from the sharp fins.

After that, you can use a canister of condensed air. Spray this into the fins and the coils. A small brush is also useful in getting rid of contaminants on the coils.

Split-Type AC Unit

If you’re cleaning the fins on your split-type air conditioning unit, you can also use your vacuum or air blower to blow air and remove the dust.

For the coils, you can use a no-rinse evaporator spray. Spray it on the coils and let the product sit according to the directions on the packaging. After that, wipe it off gently. To prevent mold growth on the components, you can also use an antifungal spray specifically made for AC units. Apply this on the coils, fins, and air filters.

Clean The Tray And Drain

After cleaning the filters, coils, and fins, you can proceed to the tray and the drain:

Window Type AC Unit

Use a wet-dry vacuum to remove the debris and dirty water from the tray of the air conditioner unit. After that, you can spray a household cleaner on the tray before wiping it with a damp cloth. Dry the tray with a towel, then let the component air dry before reassembling your AC.

For the drain, check to see if there is a blockage. You can use a clean cloth to wipe it.

Split Type AC Unit

Disconnect the hose that separates the indoor and outdoor units. You can use a pressurized flush kit to unclog the drain line. After that, allow the component to air dry before reconnecting.

Clean The Outdoor Unit Of Your Split Type AC

If you have a split-type AC, you also have to clean the outdoor unit. First, make sure to switch off the power so that no electricity is flowing to it. Use a brush attachment on your vacuum to suck out the dust and debris from the condenser fins. Then straighten the fins with a long knife.

After that, take out the fan and other electrical components. Once it’s safe to do so, rinse the fins with water from the inside of the unit. Let it dry before reassembling the unit.
