“Solving Real World Hunger Problems, One Bowl of Soup at a Time”
September 28, 2019, Tondo, Manila. Hanabishi unites with San Miguel Corporation in the fight against hunger with their donation of kitchen appliances for the newly inaugurated Better World Facility in Tondo, Manila. In the initial feeding ceremony, private corporations and volunteers opened the facility to parents and children belonging to the poorest of the poor sector of Tondo. Together with Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief organization, the newly built Soup Kitchen is now open and cooking, with an estimated number of 1000 undernourished children in Tondo as this year’s first batch of beneficiaries.
Based on Philippine statistics, 66% of households are food insecure. NCR is second in the country with the highest food insecurity next to ARMM. Manila belongs to the top 5 cities within NCR with the highest prevalence of malnutrition. In order to address hunger and food waste, San Miguel partnered with Rise Against Hunger to provide a system that would sort food products, eliminate wastage, and reach the tables of more Filipinos in need.
Food manufacturers led by San Miguel Corporation, Monde Nissin, Mondelez, Century Canning, Del Monte Philippines, Kraft Heinz, Ultrafood Corporation, Coca-Cola, Rebisco and Mondial Trading together with corporate donors for feeding program like Hanabishi, JP Morgan Chase & Co., HP Enterprises, Forever Living Philippines, Google/Sodexo, Mercato and E-Magsasaka, with the participation of hotel companies namely Makati Diamond Residences, Manila Diamond Hotel, Conrad Manila, Hilton, New World Hotel and Seda, and App developers like Zen Desk, collectively turn the tables on hunger with this project.
Hanabishi donated chest freezers, water dispensers, deep fryers, grillers, food steamers, dish sterilizers, rice cookers, percolators, pressure cookers, and industrial fans to the Better World Tondo facility to make it easy for volunteers to prepare the meals for the under-nourished children. Rise Against Hunger is driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Their mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and by creating a global commitment to mobilize the critical resources.
One of the unique features of the facility is the AHA! Learning Center. Through the effort of San Miguel Corporation Foundation, young students who fail to pass an aptitude test in their own schools are brought to the AHA! Learning Center at the Better World Tondo facility to enjoy free after-school tutorials, exposure trips, and values formation. The classroom is equipped with water dispensers from Hanabishi, to allow children access to clean drinking water as well.
Hanabishi’s social responsibility supports the nourishment and education of the impoverished youth. This partnership with San Miguel Corporation Foundation manifests the undying commitment of the brand to give back to the less-fortunate Filipinos, one bowl of soup at a time.
